Costume/Makeup Research

Orphans
Makeup:
As the orphans background is that their orphanage was set on fire and they died in the fire, we plan to make the orphans have burn marks on half of their body in certain scenes where they are showing their evil side.

I researched how we would create these burn marks and I found this website:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Burn-Makeup-With-Liquid-Latex/

The materials we would need are:
- Liquid Latex
- Red, black, brown, orange/yellow paint
- Popsicle stick (to spread the latex with)
- Tissue paper
- Vaseline
- Fake Blood

Liquid Latex:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liquid-litre-Making-Prosthetic-Costume/dp/B01CYGF50C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1477037687&sr=8-2&keywords=liquid+latex

Paints:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Professional-Set-Cosmetic-Palette-Art-Halloween-Dress-Beauty/dp/B01IMYRI2S/ref=sr_1_19_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1477040001&sr=1-19&keywords=special%2Beffects%2Bmake%2Bup&th=1

Fake Blood:

Gel: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mehron-Coagulated-Blood-stage-door/dp/B018RFGU6W/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1477039592&sr=1-1&keywords=non%2Bdrip%2Bblood&th=1

Brushes to apply blood and paint:

Tissue Paper, Sponges, Popsicle Sticks and Vaseline will be brought from local Pound Shops and taken from home.

Costume:
The orphans are ghost therefore will need to wear old fashioned gown typically worn in orphanages in the past. We plan to make them from early 1900's and I found that traditional orphans were from poor backgrounds who parents had passed from diseases or couldn't afford to look after them. They were usually treated really badly as no one really cared about them and were usually servants for rich people. In European orphanages, they were usually made to dress alike which was most of the time in smocks/gowns (see picture to right). We plan on making their outfits dirty with mud etc to age the clothing even more. We also plan for them to wear two braids to make them look childish.

Props:

We wish the orphans to have teddies which we will make dirty using muddy water to make it look shabby and old and remove the nose or eyes on it to age it even more.
We plan to find two teddies in a charity shop etc to make them already wore a bit and cheap.

Priest
Costume:
As part of our trailer we will have a priest and we wish to have a traditional Catholic priests outfit that is recognisable as a priest to people who aren't Catholic as well.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/281914298264?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=41088503464&rlsatarget=pla-259290717542&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=9044961&device=c&campaignid=672297739&crdt=0

Props:
To link to the religion theme we will have the priest hold a Bible and crucifix and wear a rosary.
This will come from our group members homes.

Mother/Father
Costume:
For these characters, we want them to wear normal, contemporary clothing that will be worn by a couple in their early 30’s. For example, the mother would wear jeans and a blouse top and comfortable shoes and the father would wear Jeans, a shirt and smart shoes. We want them to wear clothing that is still in style and that will suit their personalities.

Props:
To link to them being contemporary and a young couple they will be using smart phones and technology, such as a computer/iPad etc.

Girl on the Train In Class Trailer Analysis

The trailer begins with a characters dialogue and is an introduction to her life. She speaks very seductive and in a few of the clips showing her character there is usually something sexual happening someone. Also the clothing that she wears links to her character being sexy and desired. There is many intertitles throughout the trailer which shows the production companies etc and also link to the storyline, like 'at 4:36 pm' telling you the time the woman went missing. The scene of the woods with police tape tell the audience it was a crime scene where the woman was killed. The female with the brown hair, who seems to be the main character is then shown saying she saw the woman being taken by a man and she saw this whilst being on the train. This links to the title of the film 'the girl on the train' and suggests that there is bigger important behind the train and her character is hiding something about the moment she sighted her.
Through the trailer her story develops and you see her trying to find evidence, possible to help solve the crime, however later in the trailer she says there is time missing in her day that she cant recall making the audience believe she has something to do with the death of this woman, so could have been looking for evidence her help what she did not be discovered. The trailer shows twists in the story which make the audience confused and wanting to know more. This makes the trailer effective as its purpose is to get people to see the film.
The music used goes well with the clips. At the start the music is slow and as soon as things start going wrong the tempo begins to increase. During the montage of clips toward the end of the trailer, there is a part of the song where it is louder than the rest and when this happens it jump cuts to the next scene showing action, like the mirror being smashed.
There is dialogue when the woman mentioned her husband to where the detective corrects her saying ex-husband and turns out the woman who was killed was his nanny. This suggests that the woman who was killed was seductive toward her ex-husband and they probably had sex, making the audience assume she is jealous of the woman or angry as she slept with her ex-husband as by still calling him her husband shows she's still in love with him so this led her to kill her.
The clips are edited well together with background to the character who was killed at the beginning which is like the 'calm before the storm' as after the clips begin to have more action in them and more upbeat music begins which makes the audience heart rate and interest increase.
One of the intertitles said 'based on the thriller that shocked the world' telling the audience is based on a novel and the fact the novel did so well the film will be as good or better and is worth seeing. It helps to persuade the audience to watch it as if they have or haven't read the novel they will know it is a good storyline and lots of people enjoyed it.
At the end of the trailer we heard the main character saying the reason she went somewhere was 'because I'm afraid of myself', which could suggest she went to a mental hospital to get help or stop herself harming people. This suggests she is part of the killing of the woman and makes the audience question everything she said and want to discover what is wrong with her and what really happened.
The final intertitles that were show are the title of the film as well as the date it is to be released. This is good as after watching the trailer the audience can remember the date so they can go and see the film.

Quote Analysis

We looked at this quote today in class;

"That's the perverse thing about publicity; we'd all prefer the audience going in knowing nothing at all. But in order to hook them, you have to tell them something."
- Emma Donoghue

I believe this quote links directly to marketing/advertising for films as by advertising you are giving people little snipped of what the film is about or what characters/actors/actresses appear in the film. You need to capitative the audience by giving them something to think about and get something before they give their time/money. Also things like tag lines get the audience to thing about what the film may include. Trailers are the biggest way of telling the audience a bit of what the film is about, in my opinion. This is because it gives you a few seconds of key scenes of the film and they are all the high action scenes so it gets the audience excited for the film. Even telling the audience the name of the film can be giving them something to think about but without any other information about the film it won't pursued people to go and see the film as they will have no clue what its about and don't wish to be disappointed. By showing them something they can decide if they like it and it is more likely to get a bigger audience if there is more advertising as this hooks them onto the storyline and they want to know more. This links directly to our task of making a film poster, magazine front cover and of course the trailer, as they are all things to get the audience hooked.

Poster Analysis - The Blair Witch Project

The colours used are, black, white and red. This is typical for horror as the black connotes darkness and unknown, red connotes blood and death and white connotes purity as also white text makes it easy on the eye against the back background.
The red symbol has important to the film and by watching the film you will possibly get better knowledge about it. The symbol looks like lines making up a person, this could suggest the characters make up a person out of the branches in the woods.
The main thing in the poster is the person which sows just there eyes and is lit using a torch. This relates to the setting and style of the film as it is filmed by a handheld camera by the characters and the torch is there only source of light as they are camping in the woods. It makes the audience feel sympathy for the character as there is clear fear in their eyes. At the top you can see light coming through trees telling the audience it is set in a forest. Also shows the darkness and confusion whist being in the woods as all the trees look the same and it is mainly in darkness. The images seem to be photographic and possibly a screengrab from the film.
As the film is a remake it suggests the audience is fans of the previous film and also people that enjoy horror/supernatural films as it is about an unknown spirit in the woods. Also as it is based on true events it gives the film a USP and makes it more scary for the audience as it is something that happened and isn’t made up.
This poster is a USP style poster as it doesn’t use a character approach as the character isn’t made clear and it isn’t an actor/actress approach as the name of the cast members aren’t even shown on the poster which subverts from usual conventions. The layout is also unusual and the title of the film is smaller than usually seen on film posters.
There is also no critic quotes on the film poster which link to the creepy side of the film and that fear of unknown and mysterious.
The film poster attracts attention as even though it is simply it gives the audience chills as it states it is based on a true story and more relatable as the photo shows it isn’t filmed by a big crew but they characters themselves on a handheld device and shows it happened to regular everyday people.
It has the conventions of other film posters as at the bottom it has the director/cast members/ producers names etc. Also it has logos of companies that helped make the films as well as the official film website.

Questionnaire Analysis - Audience Research

Questionnaire

Questionnaire Video - Audience Research

Brainstorm/Mood Board - Audience Research

Mise-en-scene Mood Board - Genre Research

Location
Usually an isolated area where characters have no one around to help them.  Usually surrounded my forest or field or even a graveyard. In our trailer we have decided to base it on orphans so I included a picture of an old fashioned orphanage to inspire one of our locations.

Lighting
The lighting in horror films are used to create effect of something bad happening, like darkness and light flickering as it is unknown what is in the dark as you can't see anything, so creates fear within the audience. Also shadows are seen as sinister and make the scene/character more mysterious.

Characters
There is many types of characters featured in a supernatural horror film. There is always a ghost or demon or someone who possessed by one (usually female in supernatural horror - stereotypically weaker so easier to control, whereas in other sub-genres it is usually a male character who murders people - stereotypically stronger). This is the character that is feared as it is unknown what to expect and how to stop them as well as the amount of damage they can cause.
There is always an innocent non-believer character who won't believe it til they see it, as well as someone who is effected the most and the most afraid of it (usually female - damsel in distress). And the final usual character is the 'saviour' who finds out how to get rid of the ghost/demon (usually male - a priest or love interest).

Costume
Usually the ghosts will wear white gowns and usually have long hair that covers their face (converts to element of unknown). In supernatural horror films the story usually follows a family so they would wear clothing typically to their age group. In other sub-genres it depends on the characters stereotypical personality for example in slasher horror the 'dumb' blonde would usually wear slutty clothing. However this won't be reliant for our trailer as we aren't doing this sub-genre.

Props
The props we will use in our trailer will be stereotypical to the characters. There will be use of children's toys as the ghost orphans are young and would be playing with toys. Also we will use typical props such as skulls and cobwebs and burned candles to emphasise the scene is set in an old abandon place and suggests death and isolation, important themes within horror film. Also as we plan to have a priest character so we will have props such as a bible, crucifix and rosary.
